She was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, to an Indian mother, Shyamala Gopalan, and a Jamaican dad, Donald Harris. Her mom was a breast cancer researcher, and her dad was an Economics professor at Standford University, her younger sister is a legal counselor and public strategy advocate.

Her childhood was in Berkeley, California, where she went to Thousand Oaks Primary School and moved on from Westmount High School in Quebec, Canada.

She proceeded to go to Howard College, a generally dark college in Washington, D.C., where she procured certification in arts degree in political Political science and economics. After Howard, she acquired her Juris Specialist (J.D.) from the College of California, Hastings School of the Law.

Early Career

Kamala started her career in the Alameda County  District Attorney’s Office, where she had some expertise in prosecuting child sexual assault cases. Her devotion drove her to jobs in the San Francisco Head Prosecutor’s Office and the San Francisco City Lawyer’s Office.

U.S. Senator

Kamala Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016, serving on key committees like Homeland Security, Intelligence, Judiciary, and Budget. She gained recognition for her sharp questioning in high-profile hearings, including those of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and the 2016 Russian election interference investigations.

President Campaign

In January 2019, Kamala Harris launched her 2020 presidential campaign, focusing on economic justice, healthcare reform, and criminal justice reform. Despite early popularity, internal issues and funding problems led her to withdraw in December 2019.

Role As vice president

As Vice President, Kamala Harris leads efforts on immigration reform, voting rights, and addressing migration causes from Central America. She also represents the U.S. in international diplomacy.

Personal Life

Kamala Harris is married to Doug Emhoff, an entertainment lawyer who became the first Second Gentleman of the United States. She has two stepchildren, Ella and Cole Emhoff.
